  1. Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA)

  4. Description 
  5. A radical terrorist group formed in 1969 as the clandestine armed wing of 
  6. Sinn Fein, a legal political movement dedicated to removing British forces 
  7. from Northern Ireland and unifying Ireland.  Has a Marxist orientation. 
  8. Organized into small, tightly knit cells under the leadership of the Army 
  9. Council. 
  10.  
  11. Activities 
  12. Bombings, assassinations, kidnappings, extortion, and robberies.  Targets 
  13. senior British Government officials, British military and police in Northern 
  14. Ireland, and Northern Irish Loyalist paramilitary groups.  PIRA's operations 
  15. on mainland Britain in 1993 included a large truck bombing in London's 
  16. financial district and a major bombing campaign against train and subway 
  17. stations and shopping areas.

  20. Several hundred, plus several thousand sympathizers.

  22. Location/Area of Operation 
  23. Northern Ireland, Irish Republic, Great Britain, and Western Europe.

  25. External Aid 
  26. Has received aid from a variety of groups and countries and considerable 
  27. training and arms from Libya and, at one time, the PLO.  Also is suspected 
  28. of receiving funds and arms from sympathizers in the United States. 
  29. Similarities in operations suggest links with ETA.
